Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov (1921-1992)-Soviet orthopedic surgeon, inventor, Doctor of Medical Sciences (1968), Professor (1976). Born on June 15, 1921 in Bialowieza, Poland. In 1944, he graduated from the Crimean Medical Institute named after I. V. Stalin. Since 1944-doctor of district hospitals of the Kurgan region. Since 1950 — traumatologist-orthopedist of the Kurgan Regional Hospital.
In 1951, Ilizarov proposed his own method of fusing bones in fractures with the help of an original design — a device for transosseous fixation. The device is a metal "ring", which is attached to the "spokes" that pass through the bone tissue. The rings are connected by mechanical rods that allow them to change their orientation at a rate of about one millimeter per day. The device is used for the treatment of injuries, fractures, congenital deformities of bone tissue. It is also used for "aesthetic" operations in anthropometric (orthopedic) cosmetology to lengthen and straighten the legs.
New effective methods of treatment of injuries and diseases, developed by G. A. Ilizarov, allowed to reduce the duration of treatment and in some cases proved an advantage over the traditional methods of treatment of orthopedic and traumatological patients that existed up to that time in practical and theoretical medicine. In 1966, the laboratory of the Sverdlovsk Research Institute for the Study of the method of transosseous osteosynthesis was established in Kurgan on the basis of the 2nd city Hospital. In 1969, on the basis of the Kurgan Problem Laboratory, a new medical institution was created — a branch of the R. R. LNIITO. Vreden, which in 1971 was transformed into the Kurgan Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Orthopedics and Traumatology. The director of the Institute was appointed Doctor of Medical Sciences G. A. Ilizarov. In 1987, it was reorganized into the All-Union Kurgan Scientific Center " Restorative Traumatology and Orthopedics "(VKNC"WTO").
Academician Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov is the author of 208 inventions protected by copyright certificates of the USSR; 18 of them were patented in 10 countries. Under the leadership of Ilizarov, 52 candidate's and 7 doctoral theses were defended.
