State awards of the Russian Federation are the highest form of merit recognition of members of the public for exceptional service in the defense of the Motherland, nation-building, economics, science, culture, art, training and education, protection of health, life and human rights, charitable activities and other accomplishments for the state.
State awards are instituted and presented by the President of the Russian Federation.
The Pirogov Order is a state award of the Russian Federation instituted by Decree No 404 of the President of the Russian Federation of June 19, 2020. The award is named after Nikolay I. Pirogov, Russian surgeon, scientist and tutor, the founder of military field surgery. The Order is granted to citizens of Russia for selflessness on delivery of health-care services in case of emergencies, epidemics, hostilities and other circumstances associated with hazard to life; for merits in the field of practical medical activities and efficient organization of diagnostics, prevention and treatment of highly dangerous diseases; for the contribution into public health promotion, prevention of origination and development of contagious and non-contagious diseases, as well as in other cases specified in the statute.
