Vasily Vasilyevich Vereshchagin (1842–1904) was a Russian painter and a writer, one of the major war artists. He traveled the world extensively visiting India, Europe, America and Cuba. He took part in battle actions in Central Asia, the Balkans and in Japan. It was all represented in his paintings.
The postage stamp features the Cape Fiolent near Sevastopol (1897) painting by Vasily Vereshchagin, and the souvenir sheets margins bear a portrait of the artist.
