Research and Production Corporation Konstruktorskoye Byuro Mashinostroyeniya was founded by a Decree of the State Defense Committee No 1576 dd 11 April 1942 specifically to develop mortar weapons used during World War II. From the first post-war years till now, JSC “RPC KBM” develops remote-controlled weapon stations in four fields — man-portable air-defense systems, anti-tank guided missiles, short-range tactical ballistic missile systems, and an active protection systems.
JSC “RPC KBM” is the world’s leader and the only Russian company that manufactures man-portable air-defense systems. The company has developed a whole series of such systems — the 9K32 Strela–2, 9K32M Strela–2M, 9K34 Strela–3, 9K38 Igla, 9K310 Igla–1 and 9K338 Igla–S. As for anti-tank weapons, JSC “RPC KBM” devised the 3M6 Shmel , the first Soviet anti-tank guided missile, and the 9M14 Malyutka, the most widely produced anti-tank guided missile of all time. Since 1970s, the 9K79 OTR-21 Tochka, 9К79-1 Tochka–U and 9K714 OTR-23 Oka, as well as the world-famous 9K720 Iskander, have entered service with the army.
