Its name is based on its geographical location and in Greek means “peninsula”. The “Tauric” attribute appeared due to warlike Tauri tribes, which inhabited the neighboring highlands.

Pottery, blacksmithing, founding, construction and bone-carving, as well as seafaring and fishing industry were developing in the city. The Chora, a rural region around the city, played an important role — it is there that fortifications and estates were constructed, gardens were laid out, lots were delimited, vineyards were cultivated.

Nowadays the National Preserve of Tauric Chersonese is a major museum and research institution. In 2013, Ancient City of Tauric Chersonese and its Chora were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
