Artek as a children's camp-resort was founded on the initiative of Z. Soloviev, the chairman of the Russian Red Cross June 16, 1925. 80 pioneers from Moscow, Ivanovo-Voznesensk and Crimea were came on the first shift. Two years later, plywood houses were built on the beach line, and in the 1930s a winter-house was built and the children's center started to work all year long.
Stamps, dedicated to "Artek" were already issued in USSR: "In a Pioneer Camp "Artek" (1938; face value: 30 kopecks), "Artek". Pioneers in the Field" (1948; face value: 45 kopecks), "Bugler in the Pioneer Camp "Artek " (1958; 10 kopecks), 4 cop. "60 years of the Union Pioneer Camp "Artek" named after Vladimir Lenin" (1985; face value: 4 kopecks). In the mid-1970s it was issued a postcard with an original stamp dedicated to "Artek", stamped envelopes were issued repeatedly.
