The history of Bryansk land goes back to the end of the X century. Vladimir I (grand prince of Kiev), wanting to finally subdue tribes of the Vyatichy, "began to build cities on the Desna and on Vostry, and on Trubezhevy and on Sula, and on Stugna". The foundations of the fortress city Bryansk were laid in 985, which also played the role of the center of spread of Christianity. At the beginning of the XIV century, Bryansk was ravaged by the Tatars, and then came under the authority of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and only in 1500 the city was returned to Russia and their habitants swore allegiance to Moscow. Officially Bryansk region with its present borders was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on July 5, 1944, after the liberation of its territory from the German occupation.
