The Russian civil alphabet is the version of Cyrillic alphabet, which was used for printing books and other documents of secular character in Russian language; it was put into practice due to the reforms of Peter I in 1708-1710 years.
Prior to that time the Cyrillic alphabet had been used in Russia, the same for the Church Slavonic language and for the secular Russian language.
In 1708 the emperor signed the decree establishing that all books must be printed in the new civil font. However, the work on this font was finished only in 1710 year, when Peter I personally made the last correction in the printed impressions of the alphabet.
The stamp depicts the first page of the alphabet.
