The State Tretiakov Gallery is the treasury of fine arts which is famous worldwide. A Russian merchant and manufacturer P.M.Tretiakov (1832-1898) decided to create a museum of the national Russian art. He started to collect pictures in 1856. The museum was situated in a specially built premise which bordered with Tretiakovs’ house in Lavroushinsky lane. M.P. Tretiakov handed over the gallery in free use of Muscovites. The collection of the Tretiakov gallery reflects the history of Russian painting, sculpture and graphic arts in full measure. The front of the building of the Tretiakov gallery and the monument to its founder are depicted on the postal block.
