The margins of the souvenir sheet are decorated by a frame formed by the elements of the ornament. On the top of the block there is a text: "200th anniversary of V.I.Dal, 1801-1872". On the foot of the souvenir sheet there is an extract from V.I.Dal's work about the importance of the Russian language, his facsimile and the picture of a Moscow house ("Dal's House") where the writer lived and worked in 1859-1872.

The stamp features the picture of V.I.Dal (by V.G.Perov, 1872, the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow). V.I.Dal (1801-1872) was a Russian writer, lexicographer and etnographer. His main work is "The Explanatory Dictionary of the living Russian Language" (volumes 1-4, 1863-1866), for which he was graced the Lomonosov prize of the Academy of Sciences and a honorary rank of the academician (1863).
