The stamp features the portrait of Emperor Nicholas II Romanov. Nicholas II was the last Russian Emperor (since 1894). During his reign the Russian Empire took part in the Russian-Japanese war in 1904-1905 and was defeated which in a way triggered the revolution of 1905-1907. In 1907 Russia became part of the Entente and later joined the WWI. In August 1915 Nicholas II became The Supreme Commander-in-Chief. During the February Revolution of 1917 Nicholas II abdicated. The stamp features details of the Great Coat of Arms of the Russian Empire, approved in 1857. The text under the portrait reads "Nicholas II. 1868-1918" and the Emperor's monogram.
