The independence of India was proclaimed on Aug 15 1947. Javakharlal Neru (1889 – 1964) was made Prime Minister. The stamp features the "Lion Capital" (the state coat of arms of India) from the city of Sarnatkha. The capital (243 BC) is the upper part of the cult pillar, a stambkha, erected under king Ashoka (268-232 BC). In the background there is the state flag of the Republic of India. The text reads: "The 50th Anniversary of independence of India" in Russian and "The Truth will win" in Hindi.
