The stamp features the Petropavlovskaya fortress, which was established by Peter the Great in 1703. The fortress looks like a stretched hexagon with projected angular bastions. It's lines proceeded from the natural form of the Zayachiy island where the fortress is situated. There are a lot of sights to see in the fortress, such as Petrovskiye Gate (1717-1718, by D.Trezini), Nevskie Gate (1784-1787, by N.A.Lvov), Petropavlovskiy Cathedral (1712-1733, by D.Trezini, a three-naved basilica with a bell-tower, built in the baroque).
