The first prototypes of motorcycles appeared in the USSR in the late 1920s. The first Soviet serial model, the L-300 Red October, was released in 1930 at the Promet plant in Leningrad. However, this went nowhere, and it was only in the late 1940s that large-scale motorcycle production in the cities of Irbit, Izhevsk, Kovrov and Minsk.
IZh is a Soviet and Russian brand of motorcycles developed at the IZhMASh plant (Izhevsk, Udmurt Republic) in 1929. Mass production has been running since 1946; a total of about eleven million motorcycles of different models have been manufactured. In 2018, the development of Kortezh, a fully electric motorcycle under the brand name IZh, designed to accompany the official state car.
Ural is a heavy motorcycle produced since 1940 at the Irbit Motorcycle Factory (Irbit, Sverdlovsk Oblast). It is mainly operated with a sidecar and has a high cross-country performance. Ural motorcycles are well-known in the world market, and currently are mainly produced for export.
PMZ was the first Soviet heavy motorcycle developed at the Podolsk Mechanical Plant (Podolsk, Moscow Oblast) in 1934. It was operated both with a sidecar and without one. It was intended for the army and civil service.
Voskhod is a brand of road motorcycles produced by the Degtyarev Plant (Kovrov, Vladimir Oblast) since 1965. The most popular models were Voskhod-2 and Voskhod-2M. Boasting low fuel consumption and ease of use, it was also lightweight and maintenance-friendly. The plant also produced a limited number of motocross bikes, ard created several interesting sportbikes in the 1980s.
