Ilya Yefimovich Repin (1844–1930) was a Russian painter, teacher, professor, active member of the Imperial Academy of Arts. He worked in various genres and techniques. He created historical paintings, landscapes, illustrated classical Russian literature pieces.

His works demonstrate the heroism of Russian revolutionary movement and acute social problems of the early 1900s. Repin is also considered a great master of portraiture. His works depicting representatives of common people and aristocracy, as well as intelligentsia and royal dignitaries are a sort of a chronicle of the whole era of Russia.

Repin's artistic legacy is huge. His best-known works are exhibited in The Tretyakov Gallery and Russian Museum. The most significant ones are Barge Haulers on the Volga (1870–1873), Modest Musorgsky (1881), Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan on 16 November 1581 (1885), Unexpected Return (1888).
