An apple tree is one of the most important fruit crops in Russia. Thanks to its valuable biological properties, attractive appearance, scent, delicate taste of the fruits, high storageability and transportability, the apple tree has gained unparalleled popularity and become widespread world over.
The apple tree is one of the oldest crops. It was brought to Russia from Byzantium in the 10th century. Yuri Dolgoruky demanded first apple gardens be laid out in the Moscow area as early as in the 12th century. Nowadays, Michurinsk, the birthplace of the great Russian practitioner of selection Ivan Michurin, is the heart of Russian fruit growing. The planting material grown there is used to set up industrial gardens all over Russia.
An apple is a round fruit produced by an apple tree with white pulp and red, yellow, green or violet skin. It has a moderately sweet and refreshing taste. Ripe apples contain vitamins C, B1, B2, E, A, as well as fructose, organic acids, mineral salts and trace nutrients, pectin and tannin. Apples normalize the work of digestive system, improve appetite, prevent stones from building up in kidneys, anemia, and strengthen cardiovascular system. There are cultivars with summer, autumn and winter ripening, so apples may be consumed all the year round; and jam, marmalade, fruit puree, juice, vinegar, and dried fruit drink are always in high demand.
