The theater was founded in 1925, when graduates of the Maly Theater studio under the direction of E. Leshkovskaya, S. Aydarov and N. Kostromskoy organized a fit-up. They decided to connect their stage experiments with the name of great actress Maria Yermolova, to which she gave her consent.

In 1933, the team of the Yermolova Theater teamed up with the actors of the Lunacharsky Studio Theater organized by M. Tereshkovich and in 1937, with the Studio Theater under the direction of N. Khmelev. The head of the Yermolova Theater became People's Artist of the USSR N. Khmelev. In 1944, the theater was headed by People's Artist of the RSFSR A. Lobanov.

In the 1956-1970s, the stage directors in the Theatre were L. Varpakhovsky, V. Komissarzhevsky, P. Vasiliev, and A. Shatrin. In the 1970-1980s, the theater was headed by V. Andreev, a student of A. Lobanov.

In 1989, the theater team was split into two companies: the Yermolova Theater and the Yermolova International Theater Center. In 1996, the production of V. Andreev's Mary Stuart by F. Schiller marked the symbolic unification of the two companies: it was for the first time in seven years that artists of the Theater Center and the Yermolova Theater played together on the Yermolova Theatre stage.

In April of 2012, O. Menshikov became the artistic director of the Theater.
