Samuil Yakovlevich Marshak (1887-1964) is a soviet poet, playwright, translator, book critic. In 1907 he published his first collection “Sionidy”. In 1914 his translations were printed in the magazines “North notes” and “Russian thought”. In 1923 he published for the first time verses children’s books “The house that Jack built“, “Tots in a Cage”, “Silly Little Mouse”. During the years of the Great Patriotic War the writer has been working in the satiric genre publishing the verses in the newspaper “Pravda”. S.Ya. Marshak is the laureate of the Lenin Prize (1963) and of the Stalin Prize for four times (1942, 1946, 1949, 1951).
