Boris Jacobi (1801–1874) was a physicist, an engineer and inventor, one of the founders of modern electrochemistry.

In 1838, B. Jacobi discovered electroplating, laying the foundation for an entire direction of applied electrochemistry. Immediately after the discovery, this method began to be used all over the world. Thus, in Russia, electroplating was brought into use for minting medals, as well as for manufacturing copper printing cliches and coins, which made it possible to carry out monetary reform in the country in the shortest possible time.

Significant gains were achieved by B. Jacobi in the field of telegraphy. He designed about 10 types of various telegraph machines; among them was a device of synchronous action with direct (without decoding) indication in the receiver of transmitted letters and digits and one of the world's first type-printing telegraph sets.

In the Russian military history, B. Jacobi remained as one of the leading inventors of galvanic batteries and sea anti-ship mines of a new type, including self-priming (electrochemical) mines and mines with a fuse from an induction apparatus.

The postage stamp provides a portrait of B. Jacobi against the background of a telegraph set of his invention and a fragment of an electromagnetic telegraph diagram.
