In 1825, a University of Art and Industry was founded in Moscow, which originally was named a School of drawing in relation to arts and crafts. The founder of the school was S. Stroganov, a representative of a well-known family of the richest industrialists, a participant in the Patriotic War of 1812, a protagonist of enlightenment. Education and meals were free of charge for most students; children of commoners and peasant serfs were admitted to the school and the criterion for admission to study was not the privileged position of the parents but the talent of the applicant. The school was scaled to fit 360 people. At the initial stage, there were three specializations: drawing, geometry, drawing of machines; drawing of figures and animals; drawing of flowers and ornaments.
Presently, the University is an educational institution of a high professional level of training for designers, artists of decorative, applied and monumental arts. In 2022, the institution was renamed the Stroganov Russian State University of Design and Applied Arts (RGHPU named after S. Stroganov).
