Cherkessk is a city in the North Caucasus Region of Russia and the capital of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.
Cherkessk was founded in 1825 as the Batalpashinskaya village on the site of a former military fortification, the Batalpashinsky Cossack redoubt, which had borne this name since 1804. In a later time, the first large industrial enterprise in Karachay-Cherkessia opened in the city: an iron foundry (presently, the Refrigeration Engineering Plant). During the Great Patriotic War, Cherkessk was occupied in 1942 and liberated on January 17, 1943.
Since 1957, Cherkessk has been the center of the Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Region, and in 1991, the city was granted the status of capital of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.
Modern Cherkessk is a developing city and the main industrial, administrative, economic, and cultural center of the Republic.
The postage stamp features Pervomayskaya Street, a pedestrian street in the central part of the city of Cherkessk.
