The town of military glory of Rzhev is situated in the southwest of Tver Oblast. It was first mentioned in the First Chronicle of Novgorod on 1 March 1216. Over several centuries, the city belonged to the Principalities of Smolensk, Tver and Moscow. Russia fiercely fought with Lithuania for Rzhev; that struggle was reflected in patriotic folk tales and legends.
In 19th century, Rzhev became a major linen trade hub, as well as a center for processing hemp and production of hemp yarn and ropes. Currently, the main economic sector is mechanical engineering. There are also wood-processing, construction, consumer goods and food factories.
The postage stamp features Cathedral of the Theotokos of Okovtsy (Rzhev) and the coat of arms of Rzhev.
