On January 10, a stamp dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper will go into postal circulation

The Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper was instituted by the decision of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the RCP(b) on November 29, 1923, as a central mouthpiece of the People's Commissariat for Military and Maritime Affairs of the USSR (afterwards, the Ministry of Defense of the USSR). The first issue was published on January 1, 1924.

Today, Krasnaya Zvezda is an all-Russian newspaper, a press organ of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (since January 10, 2018). It comes out three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday on 12 pages in the D2 format. The print run of the publication is 65,440 copies. The motto of the newspaper is “We guard you, Russia!”

The stamp provides an image of jubilee issues of the newspaper, as well as its awards: the Orders of the Red Star and the Red Banner, the Order of Lenin and the Order of the October Revolution.

On January 17, a postcard with a commemorative stamp dedicated to the 175th Birth Anniversary of Stepan Makarov, a naval commander, a scientist, a Vice Admiral will go into postal circulation in the Geographical Projects of Russia series

Stepan Makarov (1849-1904) was a Russian naval figure, a hero of the Russo-Japanese War, an oceanographer, a polar explorer, a shipbuilder, a vice-admiral (1896). He was an inventor of mine-carriers, a developer of the insubmersibility theory, and a proponent of using icebreakers. He was a developer of the Cyrillic-based semaphore alphabet (1895).

In 1865, Stepan Makarov graduated from the naval school in Nikolaevsk-on-Amur. In 1866-1867, he sailed on the Askold corvette to Japan and Africa. Since 1867, Makarov served with the Baltic Fleet on the Dmitry Donskoy corvette and in May of 1869, received the first officer rank of midshipman. When appointed in 1869 to the Rusalka armor plated battleship, he began a research on the problems of the ship unsinkability; to this end, he proposed to divide the ship into watertight compartments, install main pipelines with powerful pumps and branches, and to use a special collision mat for sealing holes. Later on, he repeatedly addressed the problem of ship unsinkability and published several papers on this issue, and at the 1873 Vienna World’s Fair he demonstrated his invention - a collision mat for sealing holes in the ship hull.

In 1886, he took command of the Vityaz corvette, on which in 1886-1889 he undertook a round-the-world navigation and conducted a number of scientific researches. From 1894 to 1896, he made the second round-the-world voyage.

In 1896, he was promoted to vice-admiral and became the commander of the Baltic Fleet squadron. He put forward the idea of designing a powerful icebreaker to explore the Arctic. From 1897 to 1898, Stepan Makarov personally supervised the construction of the first powerful icebreaker Ermak of his design at the Newcastle shipyards.

The main illustration shows a portrait of Stepan Makarov; in the background, there are corvette Vityaz, a map of the Pacific Ocean with the indication of the ship's path, and the logo of the Russian Geographical Society; the commemorative stamp features images symbolically reflecting geographical projects.

On January 23, a stamp dedicated to the 650th Anniversary of the Vysotsky Stavropegial Monastery will go into postal circulation in the Monasteries of the Russian Orthodox Church series

The Vysotsky Stavropegial Monastery was founded with the blessing of Saint Sergius of Radonezh in 1374 by Prince Vladimir the Bold of Serpukhov, a cousin and associate of Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy. Monk Sergius of Radonezh placed his favorite disciple Afanasy as the first hegumen of the monastery. The monastery got its name from its location on a high beautiful hill, popularly referred to as Vysokoye.

In 1931, the monastery completely ceased its activity. On March 25 of 1991, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church took a decision to revive the Serpukhov Vysotsky Monastery. Reconstruction and restoration works began.

Currently, there are six acting churches in the monastery: Pokrovsky, Nikolsky, Zachatievsky, Sergievsky, in the Name of the Three Saints and in Honor of the Icon of the Mother of God "Our Lady of Prompt Succor", in three other restoration works are in progress and two new ones are under construction.

The postage stamp features a panorama of the Vysotsky Stavropegial Monastery and especially revered saints - Blessed Sergius of Radonezh and Blessed Afanasy Vysotsky the Elder.

On January 24, a stamp dedicated to the 200th Birth Anniversary of Vladimir Stasov, an art, theatre and music critic, will go into postal circulation

Vladimir Stasov (1824-1906) was a Russian essay writer, an art and music critic, an art historian, bibliographer, archivist, and a public figure. He was an Honorary Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1900), a Privy Councillor (1884).

In 1847, he turned to the art-critical activity in the Otechestvennye Zapiski journal. From 1856, he cooperated with the Imperial Public Library. He regularly consulted writers, artists, and composers, collected and published the manuscript heritage of Russian people of art, including letters of M. Glinka, A. Dargomyzhsky, M. Mussorgsky, A. Serov and others.

In 1861-1864, he was the editor of publication Izvestiya Imperatorskogo Arkheologicheskogo Obshchestva (Proceedings of the Imperial Archaeological Society). At the same time, he was a member of the Second Department of His Imperial Majesty's Own Chancellery in 1863-1882.

He devoted numerous articles and monographs to the creative activities of K. Bryullov, V. Vasnetsov, V. Vereshchagin, I. Kramskoi, V. Perov, N. Ge, I. Repin, M. Mussorgsky, A. Borodin, masters of the performing arts (including O. Petrov and A. Rubinstein), as well as to issues of archaeology, history, folkloristics, etc.

On January 25, a stamp dedicated to mailboxes will go into postal circulation in the framework of the Joint Issue of the Communications Administrations of the RCC Member Countries

A mailbox is a box designated to collect or deliver postal correspondence (letters, postcards, etc.).

Mailboxes for the first time appeared in the Russian Empire on the streets of St. Petersburg and Moscow in 1848. In Moscow, mailboxes were introduced on November 1 of 1848 by the order of the Postal Department. The early mailboxes were wooden and massive, but they were soon replaced by metal structures with a stylized image of an envelope.

Nowadays, mailboxes are small and lightweight, made of sheet metal, simple and economical to produce. Three colors denote different types of correspondence: the boxes of the traditional blue color are for sending letters throughout Russia, the boxes of the red color are intended for correspondence within the city, and yellow boxes are for the first class express mail. Mailboxes bear the official logo with the symbol of JSC Russian Post.

The stamp features three mailboxes: a mailbox of the second half of the 19th century, a mailbox of the first half of the 20th century and a modern mailbox, as well as the RCC logo.

On January 26, a stamp dedicated to the 150th Birth Anniversary of Vsevolod Meyerhold, a stage director and a tutor, will go into postal circulation

Vsevolod Meyerhold (1874-1940) was a Russian theatre director, an actor and a tutor. He was a theorist and practitioner of the theatrical grotesque, the author of the Theatrical October program and a developer of the dramatic system referred to as "biomechanics".

In 1898, he graduated from the Theatre and Music School of the Moscow Philharmonic Society (class of V. Nemirovich-Danchenko) and joined in the company of the originating Artistic and Public Theatre.

In 1902, Meyerhold began independent stage directing activity, taking the lead, together with A. Kosheverov, of a company in the city of Kherson. In 1902-1905, about 200 performances were staged.

From 1906, he was the chief director of the Vera Komissarzhevskaya Drama Theatre. At the Alexandrinsky Theatre, Meyerhold staged such plays as At the Tsar's Gate by K. Hamsun (1908), Don Juan by Moliere (1910), Thunderstorm by A. Ostrovsky (1916) and others.

In 1920, the Vsevolod Meyerhold State Theatre (GosTiM) was founded in Moscow. Simultaneously, V. Meyerhold directed the Theatre of the Revolution in 1922-1924.

In May of 1938, K. Stanislavsky offered him the position of a stage director at the opera theatre he was leading. After the Stanislavsky’s death, V. Meyerhold became the Chief Director of the Stanislavsky State Opera Theatre and worked on opera Rigoletto.

On January 27 of 1944, one of the most tragic episodes of the Great Patriotic War ended up. The Siege of Leningrad, which had lasted 872 days from September 8 of 1941 to January 27 of 1944, was completely lifted. The blockade ring was broken on January 18, 1943.

After the blockade was broken in January of 1943, the supply of the city was gradually normalized, and already from mid-February, the wartime provision scale established for other industrial centers of the country began to be valid in Leningrad. However, the siege of Leningrad by enemy troops and fleet continued until January of 1944.

By the order of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief Joseph Stalin of May 1 of 1945, Leningrad received the status of a hero-city. By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 8, 1965, the city was awarded the Gold Star medal. The 27th of January is one of the days of military glory of Russia.

On January 30, a stamp dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the Mosfilm studio will go into postal circulation

The Mosfilm Cinema Concern is the leading enterprise in Russia, teaming up the best creative and production cinematic forces.

On January 30, 1924, the first film shot here On Wings High Up by film director B. Mikhin was released; this date is considered today the birthday of the Mosfilm.

The official emblem of the film studio - the Worker and Kolkhoz Woman sculpture against the background of the Spasskaya Tower – for the first time appeared on the screens in 1947 in the Vesna (The Spring) film directed by G. Aleksandrov.

The company has produced more than 2,000 full-length films, on which more than one generation of filmgoers have grown up. Currently, the studio carries out a full cycle of domestic film production, that is films, TV series, commercial broadcasts, various programs, music videos and a lot more.

On January 31, a souvenir sheet dedicated to the 300th Anniversary of the Saint Petersburg Mint will go into postal circulation

The St. Petersburg Mint (SPMD), a branch of Joint-Stock Company Goznak, is one of the largest mints in the world for minting coins, including commemorative and jubilee coins made of precious metals, as well as for producing orders, medals, badges of merit and other products made of non-ferrous metals.

It was founded on December 12, 1724, by Peter the Great on the territory of the Peter and Paul Fortress. In addition to coinage, the Mint performed numerous works appertaining to engraving, designing and making of medals. In the middle of the 18th century, a Laboratory for the Separation of Noble Metals was founded here, which played an essential role in the development of Russian chemistry and metallurgy of precious metals: gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

The enterprise holds the central place in the development of coinage in Russia. From 1876 to 1942, the production of state metal insignia was concentrated here; the Mint introduced technologies of mass production of orders, digestion of colored organic enamels, etc. In 1921, the Mint launched minting of Soviet coins. In August of 1941, after the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, the major part of the Mint's equipment was removed to the town of Krasnokamsk. In later time, a Mint was established in Moscow, which was assigned production facilities on the territory of the Moscow Printing Factory.

On January 31, an envelope with a commemorative stamp dedicated to the 125th Birth Anniversary of military commander Evgenii Zhidilov will go into postal circulation in the On the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 series

Evgenii Zhidilov (1899-1977) was a Soviet military commander, a lieutenant general.

He was a participant of the Civil War: having graduated from the Nizhny Novgorod infantry command staff courses, he went to the Southern Front. As a member of the 23rd Division, he took part in the defeat of Wrangel's troops and liberation of the Crimea. Since 1923, he served in the Navy in Sevastopol. Evgenii Zhidilov graduated from the Vystrel Higher Command Courses, and was a student at the Frunze Military Academy.

After the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, he was assigned to the Black Sea Fleet, where he was appointed the commander of the 7th Marine Brigade. He participated in the liberation of Sevastopol, the defense of the Caucasus, the liberation of Romania and Bulgaria. From January of 1945 to September of 1946, he served in the Pacific Fleet, took part in combat operations against Japan, and the liberation of China and Korea.

Since May of 1956, he was the Rear Services Chief of the USSR Navy. On July 10, 1961, he retired at the rank of Lieutenant General.
