Emissions of state valuable postal matter in August

On August 8, a stamp dedicated to the University International Sports Festival to be held in Ekaterinburg will go into postal circulation

The University International Sports Festival will be held in Ekaterinburg on August 19 - 31, 2023, and will be one of the most formidable sports events.

Athletes from higher educational institutes of BRICS, SCO and CIS countries are expected to participate in the Festival. During the 13-day-long competition program, University teams will compete for 193 sets of medals in 14 sports: badminton, basketball 3×3, boxing, volleyball, judo, futsal, table tennis, swimming, springboard diving, sambo, wrestling, tennis, taekwondo, and rhythmic gymnastics.

The competitions will take place at six venues: the Greenwich Tennis Academy, the Team Sports Palace, the Water Sports Palace, the Rhythmic and Aesthetic Gymnastics Center, the Judo Palace and International Exhibition Center Ekaterinburg-EXPO.

The postage stamp provides an image of the Water Sports Palace in Ekaterinburg.

On August 18, a stamp dedicated to the Gorodki sport will go into postal circulation in the Sports series

The Gorodki sport is the world’s only all-Russian folk individual and team all-season game sport. The essence consists in the alternate knocking out beyond the perimeter of the “city” (a marked area) of wooden pins (“villages”) arranged in preset configurations with a gorodki bat (a throwing sports implement) according to certain rules.

The date of the official recognition of the sport is August 19, 1923, when the first All-Union Competition took place in Moscow. Simultaneously, the Union Federation of the Gorodki Sport of the USSR was established, which was later transformed into the All-Union Federation of the Gorodki Sport.

Since 1936, National and Republican Championships began to be carried out. All the sports qualifications available in the high-level sport were conferred to Gorodki players.

In 1993, the Russian Federation of the Gorodki Sport was established and regional federations originated.

Since 1995 and 2001, accordingly, European Championships and World Championships have been organized.

On August 18, a stamp dedicated to Evgeny Zinichev will go into postal circulation in the Heroes of the Russian Federation series

Evgeny Zinichev (1966-2021) was a Russian statesman and a military figure; from 2018 to 2021, the Minister for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters of the Russian Federation; a Member of the Security Council of the Russian Federation (2018-2021); a General of the Army (2020).

The Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of September 9, 2021, awarded Army General Evgeny Zinichev with the title of a Hero of the Russian Federation (posthumously) for heroism, courage and bravery in the performance of his official duty.

The postage stamp shows a portrait of Hero of the Russian Federation Evgeny Zinichev against the background of the Putorana Plateau and a Gold Star medal.

On August 23, an envelope with a commemorative stamp dedicated to the 80th Anniversary of the Nazi troops crushing defeat by the Soviet Army in the Battle of Kursk will go into postal circulation in the On the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 series

The Battle of Kursk (July 5 - August 23, 1943), was the most important part of the strategic plan of the summer and autumn campaign of 1943 that combined the Kursk strategic defensive operation (July 5-23), the Orel (July 12-August 18) and Belgorod-Kharkov (August 3-23) strategic offensive operations. The battle lasted 49 days.

The key event of the Battle of Kursk was the battle of Prokhorovka, the most important battle of the defensive phase. It took place on July 12, 1943, on the southern face of the Kursk Bulge (Belgorod direction) in the Voronezh Front strip near the Prokhorovka station. It is considered one of the largest battles in the military history with the use of armored forces.

August 23 is the Day of Military Glory of Russia, the Day of the Nazi troops crushing by the Soviet Army in the Battle of Kursk. Belgorod, Kursk and Orel became the first cities in Russia to be granted the honorary title of the City of Military Glory.

The commemorative stamp features an emblem of celebration of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945; the main illustration shows the sculptural composition Tank Battle at Prokhorovka - Taran in the Prokhorovka Field Reserve Museum.

On August 24, a postal block dedicated to the 700th Anniversary of the Oreshek Fortress will go into postal circulation

The Oreshek Fortress is an Old Russian fortification located on Orekhovy Island at the source of the Neva River, opposite the town of Shlisselburg in the Leningrad Region. It was built in 1323 by Prince Yuri Danilovich, a grandson of Alexander Nevsky, to protect Lake Ladoga from the Swedes.

There are five towers along the perimeter of the fortress walls. Inside the fort, in its northeastern part, there stands high a citadel: a castle inside the fortress, which is circumferentially protected by three more towers and a 12-meter deep moat. It was used to store weapons and food.

Today, the Oreshek Fortress is one of the few remaining ancient fortifications, a major monument of architecture and history of federal significance. It is a branch of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg.

The postal block presents an image of the Oreshek Fortress.

On August 29, stamps dedicated to the cities of Ivanovo, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Lugansk, Nizhny Novgorod, and Yakutsk will go into postal circulation in the Cities of Labor Valor series

A City of Labor Valor is an honorary title of the Russian Federation, instituted by the Federal Law of March 1, 2020, “in order to commemorate the feat of home front workers during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945”. It is granted to the cities of the Russian Federation, whose residents "made a significant contribution to the achievement of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 by providing uninterrupted production of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises, located in the city, and demonstrated massive labor heroism and selflessness”.

The postage stamps provide images of:
