Emissions of state valuable postal matter in May

On May 6, stamps dedicated to the Berlin and Prague operations will go into postal circulation in the Path to Victory series

The Berlin Offensive Operation (April 16 – May 8, 1945) was a terminative stage of the Great Patriotic War; in the course of the operation, Soviet troops defeated more than 500,000 enemy grouping and took by assault the German capital, Berlin.

The stamp provides an image of a bas-relief with a group of Soviet soldiers participating in the Berlin offensive operation with a banner for planting on top the Reichstag building.

The Prague Offensive Operation (May 6–11, 1945) was the last strategic operation of the Red Army against Nazi Germany; in the course of the operation, German Army Groupings Center and partly South were destroyed and Czechoslovakia and its capital Prague were liberated.

The World War II in Europe was in fact completed.

The stamp provides an image of a group of Soviet soldiers with liberated citizens in Prague.

On May 7, a stamp dedicated to the 125th anniversary of invention of the radio will go into postal circulation

Radio is a form of information wireless transmission where information carrier is radio waves freely distributed in space. In May 7, 1895, at a meeting of the Russian Physicochemical Society in St. Petersburg, Russian scientist and inventor, physicist and electrical engineer Alexander S. Popov delivered a comprehensive report and demonstrated the operation of the world's first radio receiver.

The stamp provides an image of a radio set of 1895 from the collection of the A.S. Popov Central Museum of Communications.

On May 7, a stamp dedicated to the Soviet Soldier Memorial in Rzhev will go into postal circulation

The Soviet Soldier Memorial in Rzhev was put up near the village of Khoroshevo of the Rzhevsky District in the Tver Region, on the site of fierce battles of World War II in 1942–1943. Sanguinary battles along the perimeter of the Rzhev-Vyazemsk salient lasted 14 months.

The monument was built on public donations, its construction and opening is one of the key events of the Year of Memory and Glory in Russia.

On May 8, a postal block dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War will go into postal circulation within a joint issue of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus


The Great Patriotic War (June 22, 1941 — May’9, 1945) was the war of the USSR against the forces of Nazi Germany and its allies (Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovakia, Finland, Croatia) that invaded the Soviet territory. It was the most significant part of World War II that culminated in the victory of the Soviet Union and the unconditional surrender of the German Armed Forces.

From time eternal, churches were raised in Russia in memory of Homeland defenders. The main temple of the Armed Forces of Russia built in honor of the Resurrection of Christ is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, as well as feats of arms of Russian people in all the wars that fell on our country.

The margins of the block provide images of bas-reliefs with Soviet soldiers repeating the subjects of postal stamps of the Path to Victory series issued in the period of 2016–2020.

On May 8, an envelope with a commemorative stamp devoted to a feat of snipers, Heroes of the Soviet Union Natalia Kovshova and Maria Polivanova will go into postal circulation in the 75th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 series

With the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, Natalya Kovshova and Maria Polivanova finished sniper courses and went to the front as volunteers. In October 1941, they participated in the defense of Moscow and from January 1942, they fought at the North-Western Front. Young girls bravely fought against the Nazi invaders and held sniper training for sniper platoon fighters.

On August 14, 1942, the girls fought against the advancing Nazi troops near the Sutoki village, Novgorod Region. They were covering the enemy by well-aimed fire to the last bullet. When there was no longer any hope left of a positive outcome of the battle, Natalya and Maria blew themselves up with grenades along with the surrounding Nazi soldiers.

The envelope with a commemorative stamp provides an image of the emblem of celebration of the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945; the main image features a joint portrait of N.V. Kovshova and M.S. Polivanova.

On May 8, an envelope with a commemorative stamp devoted to the 100th birth anniversary of Amethan Sultan, airplane pilot, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, will go into postal circulation in the 75th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 series

Amethan Sultan (1920–1971) was born on October 20 in the city of Alupka. A graduate of the 1st Kachinsk Military Aviation School, during the years of the Great Patriotic War, he made the way from a pilot to a squadron commander of the 9th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment. He participated in the Battle of Stalingrad and proved himself as a recognized ace. In total, during the war, Amethan Sultan made 603 weapons sorties, participated in 150 air battles, and shot down 30 enemy aircrafts individually and 19 planes in a composition of a group.

The envelope with a commemorative stamp provides an image of the emblem of celebration of the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945; the main image features two Gold Star medals and a portrait of Amethan Sultan against a La-7 fighter plane.

On May 8, an envelope with a commemorative stamp devoted to the 100th birth anniversary of Nikolai M. Skomorokhov, airplane pilot, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, will go into postal circulation in the 75th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 series

Nikolai Mikhailovich Skomorokhov (1920–1994) was born on May 19 in a village of Lapot of the Saratov Province (nowadays, Belogorskoe village, Krasnoarmeysky district, Saratov region).

In March 1942, he graduated from the Bataysk Military Aviation Pilot School, and in December of the same year, he got to the front. In total, during the Great Patriotic War, Skomorokhov made 605 weapons sorties, participated in more than 130 air battles, shot down 46 fascist aircrafts individually and 8 planes in a composition of a group (the 7th result on the list of Soviet fighter aces), and destroyed 3 enemy bomber aircrafts on the ground.

On May 15, two stamps dedicated to the 150th birth anniversary of Aleksander N. Benois, painter, will go into postal circulation

Alexander Nikolaevich Benois (1870–1960) was a Russian painter, art historian, art critic, founder and chief ideologist of The World of Art.

Among the outstanding paintings by Benois, we will name the following: Military Parade of Emperor Paul I (1907, State Russian Museum), Entry of Empress Catherine II in the Tsarskoye Selo Palace (1909, State Art Gallery of Armenia, Yerevan), Petersburg Street at the Time of Peter I (1910, private collection in Moscow) and Peter I Strolling in the Summer Garden (1910, State Russian Museum).

The stamps provide images of paintings A.N. Benois’ Portrait by L.S. Bakst (1898, State Russian Museum) and Military Parade of Emperor Paul I (1907, State Russian Museum) by A. N. Benois.

On May 19, a postal block dedicated to the 125th Anniversary of the State Russian Museum will go into postal circulation

The Russian Museum is the world's largest museum of Russian art, a unique architectural and art ensemble in the historical center of St. Petersburg.

The grand opening of the Russian Museum for visitors took place on March 19, 1898. The basis of the Russian Museum collection was formed of articles and artworks donated by the Winter Palace, the Gatchina and Alexander Palaces, by the Hermitage and the Academy of Arts, as well as from collections of private antiquarians.

Nowadays, the museum collection accounts for about 400,000 exhibits and covers all historical periods and trends in the development of Russian Art, the main types and genres, art movements and schools over more than 1000 years: from the X to the XXI century.

On May 22, a postal stamp dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations Organization will go into postal circulation

The United Nations Organization is an international organization that aims to maintain and enforce international peace and security, develop cooperation among states. Established in 1945, the UN currently has 193 member states. The USSR was one of the founding countries of the organization and its member since the establishment of the UN.

The official languages of the UN and its organizations are English, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, French and Spanish. The UN headquarters is located in New York.

The postal stamp provides an image of the Let Us Beat Swords into Plowshares sculpture by E. Vuchetich in New York and a 75th Anniversary of the UNO emblem.

On May 26, a postal stamp dedicated to the 275th Birth Anniversary of Fyodor F. Ushakov, naval commander, Admiral, will go into postal circulation

Fyodor F. Ushakov (1745−1817) was a Russian naval commander, admiral, the Black Sea Fleet commander in 1790-1798. F. Ushakov was the first in history to change radically the tactics of a naval battle. His ships got swiftly to close quarters with the enemy fleet and, without wasting time for deployment, attacked the major enemy ship. Fyodor Ushakov participated in 43 naval battles and gained victory in each; he lost not a single ship in the fights, and none of his subordinates was taken prisoner.

In 1944, the Decree of the Presidium of the USSR Armed Forces instituted a military medal and an order of Admiral Ushakov, which became the highest awards for navy sailors. In August 2001, Admiral Fyodor F. Ushakov was canonized in the guise of righteous saints and became the heavenly patron of navy sailors.

The postal stamp provides a F. Ushakov’s portrait, images of the St. Andrew’s colors, St. Paul capital ship, a map of the island of Corfu and surrounding areas.

Oftentimes, the purpose of art is commemoration of and reporting on those events that should never be forgotten by subsequent generations. Front-line artists and sculptors, eyewitnesses and participants in hostilities, can, apart from telling the young generation about their military path and those severe days, visually present images of the war as well. In their works, they reflected things that helped to keep head up: true friendship, rare happiness of hearty meetings, the might and solidarity of Soviet people.

The postal stamps provide images of the following paintings:

The stamps are provided with an up-to-date complex of protection means and are produced on self-adhesive support material, which facilitates their usage.

The postal miniatures present an image of an emblem of the federal postal service organizations of the Russian Federation in an ornamental design.

On May 27, a postal block devoted to the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Tatarstan will go into postal circulation

May 2020 marks a Centenary of the formation of the Republic of Tatarstan. The Republic was established on May 27, 1920, as the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic; since 1992, the Republic of Tatarstan has its current name.

The Republic is a component part of the Volga Federal District. Its area is 67.8 thousand square km The population is 3.86 million people (2017). The capital of the Republic is Kazan. Today, Tatarstan is an economically developed and culturally rich region.

The postal block provides an image of the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Tatarstan, a national ornament, attractions of the Republic and achievements of the region in the agricultural, oil producing and engineering industries.

On May 28, a postal stamp dedicated to poet Sergei A. Esenin will go into postal circulation in the frame of a cooperative issue of Communication Boards of member countries of the RCC.

Sergei A. Esenin (1895−1925) was born in a village of Konstantinovo in Ryazan Governorate.

The poet’s writing had a noticeable impact on the Russian lyrics of the first half of the XX century. Many poetics by S. Esenin are translated into foreign languages, some of them are set to music, and they sounded in films.

The postal stamp provides an image of S. Esenin’s portrait against a lyric scene and a RCC emblem.
