The Physicotechnical Institute conducts its history from the department of the same name of the State X-ray and Radiological Institute (GRRI), established in September 1918 on the initiative of professors A.F. Ioffe and M.I. Nemenova. Abram Fedorovich Ioffe was elected the first director of the GRRI and at the same time headed the physics and technology department. World renown brought institute work in the field of solid state physics, semiconductors, quantum electronics, astrophysics, plasma physics, physical gas dynamics. The work of the institute's staff in interplanetary physics and cosmology, controlled thermonuclear fusion, and the motion of bodies in the atmospheres of the Earth and other planets are well known to specialists.
More than a hundred employees of the institute were awarded the highest national scientific awards, including the Lenin and State Prizes of the USSR, the State Prizes of the Russian Federation, the Prizes of the Government of the USSR and the Russian Federation, nominal medals and prizes of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Physical-Technical Institute named after A.F. Ioffe is one of the largest scientific centers of Russia, in which both fundamental and applied research is carried out on a wide front in the most important fields of modern physics and technology.
