November 20, a postage stamp dedicated to the ballet dancer Maya Plisetskaya to be put into circulation in the “Recipient of the Order of Merit for the Motherland” series



Maya Mikhailovna Plisetskaya (1925–2015) was an outstanding ballet dancer, choreographer, the Bolshoi Ballet’s premier dancer in 1948–1990, full recipient of the Order of Merit for the Motherland, Hero of Socialist Labour and People’s Artist of the USSR.

She was born in Moscow and after graduation from a dance school in 1943 she joined the Bolshoi Theatre to soon become their leading soloist. She performed Odette-Odile, Kitri, Mistress of the Copper Mountain, Mahmene Banu, Carmen etc.

Maya Plisetskaya was not only known as a great dancer but also as a talented choreographer and ballet mistress. She staged a big number of performances at the Bolshoi Theatre playing leading roles in many of them.

Maya Plisetskaya created a dancing style of her own remarkable for elegancy, graphics, fineness and perfection of gesture and pose. The art of dance in her plastique movements reached a high level of harmony. She was open to scenic experiments and had a phenomenal artistic longevity.

The postage stamps features Maya Plisetskaya’s portrait and an Order of Merit for the Motherland.

In addition to the stamp, JSC Marka is to issue a FDC and a special cancellation postmark for Moscow.
