Marshal of the Soviet Union Semyon Konstantinovich Kurkotkin (1917–1990) was a Soviet military commander and a Hero of the Soviet Union
He was born in the village of Zaprudnaya, Ramenskoye District, Moscow Oblast. He graduated from the Oryol Tank College (1939), the Military and Political College (1941), the Military Academy of Armored and Mechanized Forces (1951) and the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR (1958). Kurkotkin served in the Red Army since 1937, namely in the 7 th Independent Army at the Voronezh and 1 st Ukrainian Front (during the Great Patriotic War 1941‒1945). Later, he became the 1 st Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany (1966), the Commander of the Transcaucasian Military District (1968), the Commander-in-Chief of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany (1971), Deputy Minister for Defense and the Chief of Support Services of the Armed Forces of the USSR (1972)
He was awarded with an Order of Lenin, an Order of the October Revolution, three Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of the Patriotic War 1 st class, an Order of Kutuzov 2 nd class, an Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky 2 nd class, as well as other orders and medals of foreign nations
