December 1, a New Year postage stamp to be issued



In Russia, the New Year is one of the most important family celebrations, and its traditions are handed down from generation to generation. The New Year has been celebrated on 1 January since 1700 by a Decree of Emperor Peter I.

The main attribute and symbol of the holiday is the Christmas tree, which is installed in all Russian cities. Various festive contests, games and competitions take place in skating rinks and stadiums.

The postage stamp depicts a New Year circle dance in a skating rink.

December 1, an envelope with an original stamp dedicated to the 300th birth anniversary of Étienne Maurice Falconet, a sculptor, to be issued as part of World Cultural Luminaries series


Étienne Maurice Falconet was a French sculptor, whose works embodied an emotional and lyrical part of the 18th century European Classicism.

The most-known works of Falconet were such sculptures as Milo of Croton, Music for the Château de Bellevue, and Female Gardener for the Château Cressy; Duck Hunt plaster bas-relief for the Castle of Saint Hubertus; statues Winter, Threatening Cupid, and Bather; the Monument to Peter the Great in Russia.

The envelope with an original stamp features a portrait of Étienne Maurice Falconet against the background of an image of the Bronze Horseman monument to Peter I, as well as a composition of symbols of various kinds of art: a lyre, palette, books, a quill, column and a theatre curtain.

December 2, three stamps dedicated to Gabriel Shershenevich, Konstantin Palen and Vladimir Tumanov to be issued as part of World Outstanding Lawyers of Russia series

 

Gabriel Shershenevich (1863–1912) was a politician, a law philosopher, civil law specialist, a professor of Kazan and Moscow Universities, and a Deputy of the First State Duma of the Russian Empire. His works, although created over a century ago, still remain universal and relevant.



Konstantin Palen (1833–1912) was the Minister for Justice, a Procurator-General (1867–1878) and a Member of the State Council. He ensured implementation of the 1864 judicial reform, which radically changed the Russian judicial system. Largely due to his activity, the late 19th century became an extremely fruitful period for the Russian legal science and practice.



Vladimir Tumanov (1926–2011) was a statesman, the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation (1995–1997), a judge of the European Court of Human Rights, the President of the International Association of Legal Science under the auspices of UNESCO. He took an active part in defining legal basis and forming the modern judicial system of Russia, as well as in creating mechanisms of constitutional control.

The construction of the F-1 reactor was one of the key achievements of the Soviet atomic project and laid foundation for national nuclear industry and energetics. Fundamental research in such fields as nuclear physics, materials science, reactor engineering, radiation safety and neutron emission metrology were carried out at the F-1 reactor. The F-1 reactor is a monument of science and engineering.

December 9, seven postage stamps dedicated to Russian football legends to be issued as part of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ Philatelic Program



Football is one of the most popular sports both in Russia and all around the world. Representatives of different generations, interests and convictions play it on professional and amateur levels or whole-heartedly support their national team as devoted football aficionados.

The postage stamps depict athletes, who have gained top score and glorified national football at international scale.

Anatoly Andreyevich Banishevsky (1946–1997) — a forward, a coach. A participant of 1966 world cup tournament, a silver medallist of 1972 UEFA European Football Championship.

Valery Ivanovich Voronin (1939–1998) — a midfielder, a USSR national team coach. A participant of 1962 and 1966 world cup tournaments, silver medallist of 1964 UEFA European Nations' Cup. He became a member of the symbolic World XI team at 1962 world cup tournament.

Anatoly Mikhailovich Ilyin (1931–2016) — a forward, a coach. A participant of 1958 world cup tournament, a 1956 Olympic champion. He scored the first goal in the history of Europe Cups and Championships (in 1/8 Final of the 1960 UEFA European Nations' Cup).

December 13, two postage stamps dedicated to the landmarks of Ohrid and St Petersburg to be issued as part of the joint issue of Macedonia and Russia

  

Considered to be the cultural capital of Russia, St Petersburg boasts a large number of architectural ensembles and monuments, museums, cathedrals and landscape complexes that capture the imagination by their stylistic diversity and splendor. The distinctive traits of St Petersburg’s architecture are the sophisticated orderly housing, the consideration for the environment and harmony of different architectural styles.

Ohrid is the gem of Macedonia, the first capital of the Macedonian state, a birthplace of Cyril and Methodius, the creators of the Slavic alphabet. The city of Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1980. The city is famous for its architectural landmarks, in which Byzantine frescoes are preserved.

The postage stamps feature the Saint Life-Giving Trinity Cathedral of the Izmailovsky Regiment of Imperial Guards in St Petersburg and the Church of Saint John at Kaneo in Ohrid.

December 14, a souvenir sheet dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg to be issued



The Soviet Union, the United States, the United Kingdom and France entered into an agreement on trying main war criminals at the London Conference on August 8, 1945.

The International Military Tribunal (IMT) commenced in Nuremberg, Germany, on November 20, 1945. Political and military leaders of the Nazi Germany faced the IMT and were accused of crimes against peace and humanity. Most state institutions of the Third Reich were declared “criminal” as well.

The IMT ended on October 1, 1946 by the military sentencing. It was the most important joint legal action of the states that triumphed over the inhumane regime of the Nazi Germany and delivered the fair justice. The Nuremberg trials laid the foundation of the basis of the modern humanitarian law and political ethics in the modern world.

The postage stamp depicts a judgment hall where the Nuremberg trials took place. The souvenir sheet margins feature a portrait of Iona Nikitchenko, a USSR Member of the Tribunal, and Roman Rudenko, USSR Chief Prosecutor, as well as a court house and the document of the proceedings.

December 20, four postage stamps featuring uniform jackets of Russian diplomatic service officials to be issued as part of the History of Russian Uniform series


The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was established in 1802 by a Manifesto of Emperor Alexander I. The type of uniform for diplomats — the ceremonial, the workaday and travel clothes — was set up in 1834 under Emperor Nicholas I in the “Regulation on Civil Uniform". The uniform included a uniform jacket, a uniform tailcoat and a green-dark frockcoat.

The modern uniform for diplomats having the ranks of an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, and an Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the 1st and the 2nd grades was introduced by a Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation on November 17, 2001. It is solely ceremonial and is used for official diplomatic protocol events.

The postage stamps bear the following images:

• a privy counselor and a chancellor. The MFA of the Russian Empire (1834);
• a state counselor and a collegiate registrar. The MFA of the Russian Empire (1904);
• an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USSR and an attaché of the People’s Commissariat of Foreign Affairs of the USSR (1945);
• Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation (2001).
