June 23, a postage stamp dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the town of Rzhev is issued

The town of military glory of Rzhev is situated in the southwest of Tver Oblast. It was first mentioned in the First Chronicle of Novgorod on 1 March 1216.

Over several centuries, the city belonged to the Principalities of Smolensk, Tver and Moscow. Russia fiercely fought with Lithuania for Rzhev; that struggle was reflected in patriotic folk tales and legends.

In 19th century, Rzhev became a major linen trade hub, as well as a center for processing hemp and production of hemp yarn and ropes. Currently, the main economic sector is mechanical engineering. There are also wood-processing, construction, consumer goods and food factories.

The postage stamp features Cathedral of the Theotokos of Okovtsy (Rzhev) and the coat of arms of Rzhev.

Additionally, FSUE PTC “Marka” has manufactured a first day cover and first day postmarks for Moscow and Rzhev, Tver Oblast.
