St George’s Cross was the highest military award in the Russian Empire. More than 1.5 million insignias of various grades were handed out from during World War I. A “full bow”, all four crosses, was awarded to cadet Konstantin Iosifovich Nedorubov
(1889–1978), squad commander Ivan Vladimirovich Tyulenev (1892–1978), cadet Nikolai Ivanovich Ulanov (1881–1948) and squad commander Ivan Lukich Kizhnyak (1893–1980).

August 4, four stamps depicting porcelain tiles are issued as a continuation of Russian Decorative and Applied Arts series

 
 

Porcelain tiles are architectural ceramic (clay) items in a form of box plates or curvilinear parts. In Russia, ceramic decorative tablets were used to decorate palaces, cathedrals and churches, as well as to revet ovens. The main subjects of porcelain tiles were hunting and battle scenes, heroes of folk tales, fables and Russian epics, real and fantastic animals and Slavic mythological characters. 

The stamps depict porcelain tiles from various regions of Russia.

August 11, four stamps dedicated to uniform jackets of railway transport officials are issued as a continuation of History of Russian Uniform Jacket series

 
 

The history of railway personnel uniform is connected with the creation of the Institute of Transport Engineer Corps and in 1809. The stamp series demonstrates the changes that over time occurred in clothes of employees of different railroad transport divisions. 

The postage stamps depict: 

— a General and conductor of the Water and Land Transport Agency (1843);

— a locomotive depot foreman and a machinist 2nd class (1952);

— a superintendent and a conductor(1979);

— a trainmaster and a passanger car conductor (2015).

August 12, an envelope with an original stamp dedicated to the 100th birth anniversary of Édith Piaf is issued as part of World Cultural Luminaries series


 
Édith Piaf (1915–1963) was a world-famous French singer and actress.
 
The original stamp contains a composition of symbols of various kinds of art: a lyre, palette, books, a quill, column and a theatre curtain. The main image depicts Édith Piaf performing on stage.
 
Additionally, FSUE PTC “Marka” will manufacture a special postmark for Moscow.

August 13, an envelope with an original stamp dedicated to the 100th birth anniversary of Mikhail Matusovsky, a poet and a winner of the USSR State Prize, is issued




Mikhail Matusovsky true calling manifested itself in lyrics. Songs written for such his poems as Moscow Nights, What the Fatherland Starts With, Ballad of a Soldier and Fly, Pigeons, Fly became symbols ofthe country.
 
The envelope with an original stamp depicts a portrait of Mikhail Matusovsky and a set of books, as well as What the Fatherland Starts With and Moscow Nights poems against the background of a Russian landscape.

August 14, a postage stamp dedicated to Nikolayevsk-on-Amur city is issued



 
Nikolayevsk-on-Amur (Nikolayevsk till 1926) is a city of regional subordination and a center of Nikolayev region of Khabarovsk Krai of the Russian Federation.
It was founded as a military administrative settlement (Nikolaevskiy fasting) by Admiral Gennady Nevelskoy, a Russian navigator.

The postage stamp depicts a monument to Admiral Gennady Nevelskoy with city view on the background.

August 14, a stamp dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Leningrad Zoo is issued
 


The Leningrad Zoo is one of the oldest Russian zoos. Preserving the architectural planning of the 19th century, the zoo is a part of the city's architectural ensemble, as well as a keeper of its historical legacy.
Leningrad Zoo is considered to be the unique museum of wildlife, nature protection and educational institution; more than 600 kinds of mammals, birds, fish and invertebrates from different corners of the Earth are kept there.
 
The postage stamp depicts a pelican against the background of an aviary.

August 23, two stamps dedicated to the 700th anniversary of Vysokopetrovsky Stavropigial Monastery and to the 500th anniversary of Saint Lawrence Monastery in Kaluga are issued as a continuation of Monasteries of Russian Orthodox Church series 

 


Vysokopetrovsky Stavropigial Monastery is situated in Moscow on the Petrovka Street. It was founded by Saint Peter of Moscow, the first Metropolitan and the first praised of Moscow. It was built from 1315 till 1317. Peter abode was granted a right to participate in Church Council activity in the second half of the 17th century. However,Mossovet (Moscow Soviet of People's Deputies) decided to close the monastery in 1926.
Since 1991 worship service attendance has been gradually restored and the divine service has been administered in the churches. On 10 October 2009, it has been decided by His Holiness the Patriarch and the Holy Synod to reinstate the cloister in the monastery.
 
Saint Lawrence Monastery in Kaluga was founded in 1515, when Kaluga was an independent principality. It is an ancient monastery in Kaluga and the whole Kaluga region. The monastery is dedicated to Saint Righteous Lawrence of Kaluga, who was given shelter by a pious Prince Simeon in his home.

August 26, the postage will be released a stamp dedicated to the 100th anniversary of twice Hero of the Soviet Union Boris Feoktistov Safonova, fighter pilot



Boris Safonov was the first Red Army serviceman to be awarded a title of the Hero of the Soviet Union twice for heroic deeds in the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
 
The stamp depicts a portrait of Boris Safonov with the plane Polikarpov I-16 on the background, flying which he made 109 mission sorties and shot down 17 enemy aircraft.

August 28, a souvenir sheet with one stamp dedicated to the Republic of Tatarstan in the series “Coat of Arms of the Constituent Territories and Cities of the Russian Federation” will be released into circulation



The State Emblem of the Republic of Tatarstan was adopted December 7, 1992.

The State Emblem of the Republic of Tatarstan depicts a winged snow leopard with a round shield on its side, with a raised right front paw with the solar disk on the background. This disk has a frame of Tatar national ornament. The coat of arms is in the colors of the flag of the Republic of Tatarstan, and it has a circular shape.

The coat of arms of Kazan city was adopted December 24, 2004. The description of the emblem: a black snake with wings and scarlet tongue, golden legs, claws and eyes under the gold crown of Kazan with red wings on a white background in a silver field on green ground.

The stamp depicts the coat of Kazan city, the emblem of the Republic of Tatarstan of the Russian Federation and the map with region highlighted with green color are depicted on the margins of a souvenir sheet.

In addition to the issue of a postage stamp an FDC and a postmark (cancellation: Moscow; Kazan) are prepared for the release by FSUE “Marka” Publishing and Trading Centre.

August 28, a postage stamp dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Korea will be released into circulation in the framework of a joint issue between the Russian Federation and the North Korea


The liberation of Korea from colonial domination of Japan was made possible by the offensive of the Soviet troops in August 1945. The Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation was started August 9, 1945. It has led to the complete defeat of the Japanese Kwantung Army and the rapid liberation of the North-East China and North Korea.

August 15 it is celebrated annually a festival of the Independence Day of Korea or a festival “Revival of the Fatherland”, as it calls by the residents.

The stamp depicts the Arc de Triomphe in Pyongyang, symbolizing the victory in the fight against Japanese occupation.

In addition to the issue of a postage stamp an FDC and a postmark (cancellation: Moscow) have been prepared for the release by FSUE “Marka” Publishing and Trading Centre.
