October 7, a postage stamp is to be released into circulation “A Joint Issue by Communication Boards of the RCC Member Countries. Winter Sports”
The 2014 joint issue by the Communication Boards of the RCC member Countries (Regional Commonwealth in the field of Communications) is dedicated to winter sports.
The 78th World Ice Hockey Championship was held in Belarus on 9-25 May 2014.The Russian team for the fifth time became the winner; it won all the games just like in 2008, 2009 and 2012. The Russian national team defeated Finland in the final match and scored 5:2.
The postage stamp depicts hockey players rejoicing over the victory, and the RCC emblem.
An illustrated cover with four postage stamps and an FDC with cancellation (Moscow) inside has been prepared for the release.

October 9, a postal card with a commemorative stamp “100th Anniversary of Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute” is to be released into circulation
October 23, 1914 is considered the founding date of the Russian drama college. That day Evgeny Vakhtangov, Stanislavski’s young student, the leader of an amateur art studio, gave the first class to his studs.
In the spring of 1917, after a number of successful performances, the studio was named the Moscow Evgeny Vakhtangov Drama School. In 1920 it was renamed the Moscow Art Theatre’s Third Studio, which became the Vakhtangov Theatre in 1926 with a permanent theatre school. In 1939 it was given the name of Boris Shchukin, a great Russian actor and Vakhtangov’s favourite student. In 1945 the college received the status of a higher education institution.
The Institute drama teachers are famous and greatly respected. At present along with the Russian students, postgraduate students and masters, the Institute has students from South Korea, the USA, France, Israel, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine and Moldova.

October 12, two postage stamps of a joint issue between the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea “Birds”
The osprey is a large diurnal bird of prey of the Pandionidae family. The species is spread all over the world except for Antarctica and some oceanic islands. The ospreys live near large clear bodies of water plenty of fish. Their food is primarily fish which they hunt on flying high above water. At present the osprey population decreases, and the birds are included in the IUCN Red List. Russia has an agreement with Korea, India and Japan on migrating ospreys and protection measures.
The sparrowhawk is a small falcon in the genius Accipiter. The species is spread from West Europe and North Africa to the Far East and Himalayas. The sparrowhawk can be found on the most part of Russia’s territory, except for unforested deserts, steppes and tundras. They mainly hunt on small birds. Because of pesticide use in the middle of the 20th century the sparrowhawk count reached a historical minimum at some point, however its population has risen ever since.
An illustrated cover has been prepared for the release with two postage stamps issued by the Russian Federation and two postage stamps by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and an FDC with cancellation (Moscow) inside.

October 12, a postage stamp dedicated to the Formula 1 World Championship in Russia is to be released into circulation
Formula 1 is a world championship for circuit open-wheel car racing. It consists of a series of races known as Grand Prix, the winner is determined at the end of each year. The best driver is awarded the world champion title; the best team receives the Constructor’s Trophy.
Teams participating in the races "Formula 1" are used race cars of their own production for the Grand Prix. Fireballs must comply with the technical regulations of "Formula 1" and take the crash-test. Regulations and all racing series are managed by the International Automobile Federation FIA.
October 14, 2010 a contract to conduct the Grand Prix in Russia until 2020, with the possibility of extension was signed.
Race "Formula 1" Grand Prix of Russia will be held on the track in the Olympic Park in Sochi, 100 years after the last Grand Prix of Russia which was held in pre-revolutionary times.

October 15, a souvenir sheet with one stamp “200th Birth Anniversary of Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841), Poet, Writer” is to be released into circulation
Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841) - Russian poet, novelist, playwright, painter.
Lermontov arrived in Moscow in 1827 and began to write poems. His first poems were “Circassians” and “The Prisoner of the Caucasus”. In 1828 he was enrolled in the Moscow University boarding school. While studying, he was editing a handwritten magazine "Morning Star", and his poem "The Indian" was released there.
The publication of the poem "The Death of the Poet" (1837) was the turning point in his works. This poem was his furious response to the death of Alexander Pushkin. In March 1837 M. Lermontov was arrested and then transferred to Nizhny Novgorod Dragoon Regiment in Georgia by the Tsar order for dissemination of the poem.
In May 1841 the poet arrived in Pyatigorsk and received permission to stay for the treatment. Here he met Martynov, and July 15, 1841 they held a duel, which was the cause of the poet's death.
Mikhail Lermontov in his short, but creative life glorified Russian literature.
The stamp depicts a fragment of a portrait of Mikhail Lermonto painted by the artist Gorbunov (1883 Pushkin House RAS) and "A view of the Krestovaya Mountain from the gorge near Kobi” painted by Lermontov (1837, Pushkin House RAS). The margins of the souvenir sheet are illustrated with autographs and sketches of the poem "Sashka" (Pushkin House RAS).

October 21, a stamp "Coat of Arms of Sochi" is to be released into circulation
Coat of arms of Sochi was approved January 21, 2003.
It is divided into four parts.
The first part depicts the mountains of the Caucasus mountain range, mountain peaks Chugush, Achishkho, Aibka with eternal snows and glaciers - a symbol of Sochi with unique ski resort named Krasnaya Polyana located in the Adler district.
The second part depicts the golden palm, symbolizing the most northern subtropics in the world - basic and unique wealth of Sochi.
The third part depicts the sun with alternating straight and flaming golden rays. This is the infrastructure of the Central district, serving the whole Sochi resort.
The fourth part depicts azure waves of the Black Sea, washing the city and its largest beach named Lazarevsky district. This district stretches along the coast for more than 70 kilometers.
The central link is a rectangle with the image of a "bowl with fire water" ("Matsesta" translated from Ubykh - "fire water"), which gave birth to Sochi as a resort.
The postage stamp depicts the coat of arms of Sochi.

October 24, a stamp “Full Cavalier of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, Galina Vishnevskaya (1926-2012), Opera Singer, People’s Artist of the USSR” is to be released into circulation.
Galina Pavlovna Vishnevskaya (1926–2012) was a Soviet and Russian soprano opera singer, stage director, actress and People’s Artist of the USSR.
She was a member of the Bolshoi Theatre in 1952-1974. She created a number of unforgettable female characters in operas. To continue and glorify Russia’s great opera traditions on the international stage, she opened the Opera Centre in Moscow in September 2002. For her invaluable contribution to the world music art Galina Vishnevskaya received orders of Merit for the Fatherland, I, II, III and IV class, as well other most prestigious world awards.
The stamp depicts a portrait of GP Vishnevskaya and the Order of Merit for the Fatherland.

October 24, a stamp in the series “Cavalier of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called. Mikhail Kalashnikov (1919-2013), Small Arms Designer” is to be released into circulation
Mikhail Kalashnikov (1919-2013) was awarded the Hero of Russia, twice the Hero of Socialist Labor (1958, 1976), the Doctor of Technical Sciences (1971), Lieutenant-General (1999), small arms designer, creator of the world-famous Kalashnikov assault rifle (AK).
In 1938, Mikhail Kalashnikov was drafted into the armed forces. He began to develop inertial counter to account for the actual number of shots from a tank gun in the period of military service. Also he manufactured special adaptation to the TT pistol to improve the efficiency of shooting through the tank gaps, created a device for metering service life of the tank.
Mikhail Kalashnikov began World War II as a tank commander. In October 1941, his company got under artillery fire during the attack under the Bryansk. He was severely wounded in the shoulder and got a serious concussion, after he was evacuated. Kalashnikov started working on the project of submachine gun for the needs of the Red Army in the hospital.
By 1944 Mikhail Kalashnikov developed, in addition to a submachine gun, a hand gun and self-loading rifle. Those samples were never entered service with the army but the designer’s experience was considerably enriched.
Mikhail Kalashnikov took part in the competition for development of the gun with the 1943-type cartridge in 1945. Based on the results of competitive tests in 1947. AK-47 was recommended to the Soviet army, and in 1949 the government issued a decree on the adoption of the gun into service and its mass production at the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant. Gun’s official name is 7.62mm Kalashnikov rifle sample 1947 (AK).
