Preview of Stamps to Be Issued in February 2014

The Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Marka” Publishing and Trading Centre under the Federal Communications Agency’s jurisdiction has prepared the following products to be issued:

On February 7, a souvenir sheet with three stamps “XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi” will be released into circulation



The opening ceremony of the XXII Winter Olympic Games will take place on February 7, 2014 at the Fisht stadium, located in the Olympic Park. More than 5,500 athletes and team members from over 80 countries will attend the event, which will be held on February 7 to 23, 2014.

15 winter sports disciplines combined into seven Olympic sports are included in the programme of the Olympic Winter Games of 2014: three skating sports, six ski sports, two types of bobsleigh, as well as four separate sports: biathlon, curling, ice hockey and luge. In total, 98 sets of medals will be given away.

The margins of the souvenir sheet carry a QR code with an encrypted link to the www.sochi2014.com website, against the background of Krasnaya Polyana mountain peaks; there are gold, silver and bronze Olympic medals depicted on the postage stamps.

An illustrated cover has been prepared for the release with a souvenir sheet and FDCs with cancellation (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi) inside.

On February 13, a souvenir sheet “150th Anniversary of Moscow Zoo” will be released into circulation



In 2014 the Moscow Zoological Park, one of the oldest zoos in Europe, will become 150 years old.

At the opening it contained 134 domestic animals, 153 wild animals and birds and 7 reptiles. Today one can see in the Moscow Zoo more than eight thousand animals, some species have been bred by experts for the first time in the world. The zoo participates in many international programmes for the preservation of endangered types of animals, working with global environmental organisations.

In the middle of a huge bustling city the zoo delights its visitors with a new, modern, and beautiful appearance and is always glad to welcome its guests.

The margins of the souvenir sheet depict: a Macaw parrot, a giraffe, a tiger, a manul cat, a peacock, a crocodile, a brown baby bear, a pink flamingo, an Asian elephant, and a gibbon; the postage stamp shows the main entrance to the building of the Moscow Zoo.

An illustrated cover has been prepared for the release with a souvenir sheet and a FDC with cancellation (Moscow) inside.

On February 21, a series of stamps “Heroes of the Russian Federation” will be released into circulation




Aleksandr Valentinovich Perov (1975–2004) — Head of the 1st Division Task Force at Alpha group of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, Major. Awarded (posthumously) the Hero of the Russian Federation title for the courage and bravery shown during the release of the hostages in Beslan.



Andrey Alekseevich Turkin (1975–2004) — officer of Vympel group of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant. Awarded (posthumously) the Hero of the Russian Federation title for the courage and heroism shown when fulfilling a special assignment.



Andrey Nikolaevich Rozhkov (1961–1998) — Group Commander of the State Central Airmobile Rescue Team of the Russian Emergency Ministry “Tsentrospas”. Awarded (posthumously) the Hero of the Russian Federation title for the courage and heroism shown in the trial of new life-saving equipment.



Viktor Stepanovich Chechviy (1960–1999) — Deputy Commander of the Riot Police battalion of the Sverdlovsk Region Central Internal Affairs Directorate, Militia Major. Awarded (posthumously) the Hero of the Russian Federation title for the courage and heroism shown in the counter-terrorist operation in North Caucasus Region.



Mikhail Yurievich Malofeev (1956-2000) — Head of Combat Training in the 58th Army of the North Caucasus Military District – Deputy Commander of the ‘Sever’ Federal Forces Group in the Chechen Republic, General Major. Awarded (posthumously) the Hero of the Russian Federation title for the courage and heroism shown in the elimination of illegal armed groups.

The postage stamps depict the portraits of Aleksandr Valentinovich Perov, Andrey Alekseevich Turkin, Andrey Nikolaevich Rozhkov, Viktor Stepanovich Chechviy, Mikhail Yurievich Malofeev and the Gold Star medal against the background of a composition reflecting the hero’s occupation.

FDCs with cancellation (Moscow, St. Petersburg) have also been prepared for the release.

On February 21, a postal card with an original stamp “200th birth anniversary of T.G. Shevchenko (1814-1861), poet and artist” will be released into circulation



Taras Grigorievich Shevchenko (1814–1861) — a poet and writer, an artist. Academician of the Russian Imperial Academy of Arts (1860). T.G. Shevchenko’s works have been translated into many world languages.

The literary and political views of T.G. Shevchenko were influenced by the works of A.S. Pushkin, M.Yu. Lermontov, V.G. Belinsky. “Kobzar” (The Poet), the first collection of poetry by T.G. Shevchenko was published in 1840 in St. Petersburg. It started a new era in the history of the Ukrainian literature. In its “Kobzar” the poet reflected the holy shrines of Kiev, the life in Zaporozhye steppe, and the idyll of the Ukrainian peasant life.

The works written in 1857-1861 are the pinnacle of T.G. Shevchenko’s poetry. The most outstanding achievements of this period include the poem “Neofity” (The Neophytes) (1857), “Yurodiviy” (The Simpleton) (1857), “Maria” (1859).

The postal card with the original stamp depicts a portrait of T.G. Shevchenko and the covers of the editions “Kobzar” (1840), “Haydamaky” (1841), “Psalmi Davidovi” (1860), and the “Osnova” magazine (1860) from the National Museum of Taras Shevchenko.
