November 1, the “75th Anniversary of the Sambo, a Universal Combat Sport” postage stamp to be issued





The word “sambo” is a Russian acronym meaning “self defense without a weapon”. This martial art originated in the USSR.

November 16, 1938, the USSR Physical Culture and Sports Committee issued a decree on “Developing a Freestyle Wrestling”. This date is considered the official birth date of this sport.

Sambo combines the best practices of the national martial arts: stand-up fighting, Russian, Georgian, Tatar, Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Uzbek wrestling as well as French-Finnish, American freestyle techniques, English wrestling of the Lancashire and Cumberland styles, Japanese judo and sumo etc.

The stamp has a picture of sambists with the corporate identity elements in the background specially designed for the Sambo 75th Anniversary.

There are four stamps in an illustrated cover and a FDC with cancellation inside.
