Preview of stamps to be issued in May

 

On May 8, postage stamps of the series “Weapon of the Victory. Warships” are issued

The course of military actions during the Great Patriotic War has shown that the Military Maritime Fleet of the USSR coped with whole variety of assigned tasks. It has assisted to the troops of the Soviet army in executing operations in the maritime directions and performed independent combat operations on the break-down of adversary’s water communications as well as the dependence of its routes of communication.      

The postage stamps depict the following ships:

Guard escort ship “Metel”. Weapon of the Victory.

The escort ship “Metel” maintained a patrol on the approaches to the main base of fleet, convoyed landing and transport ships, launched an assault into enemy’s bases and ports. On August 26, 1945 the Escort ship “Metel” was awarded the title “Guard”.

Guard armored boat BKA-75

In 1942 the armored boat BKA-75 participated in battles for Stalingrad. In spring and in summer of 1943 BKA-75 convoyed caravans of transport and at the end of the year it took part in a famous Kerch-Eltigen landing operation.   




Red Banner gun vessel “Usyskin”.

Gun vessel “Usyskin” was included into the Volga fleet. It was awarded the title of Red Banner for the participation in the defense of Stalingrad.

Two illustrated covers are prepared to the issue: three-leaved cover consists of four postage stamps and a small sheet, FDC with cancellation; four-leaved cover consists of five small sheets.

Form of issue: sheets with illustrated margins of 15 (3х5) stamps.

Red Banner mine sweeper “Mina”.

Mine sweeper “Mina” took part in the landing operations in 1942 in Alushta, in 1943 in South Ozereika and other combat operations. The mine sweeper was awarded the title of Red Banner for successful combat actions, courage and bravery of the military personnel. 

Two illustrated covers are prepared to the issue: three-leaved cover consists of four postage stamps and a small sheet, FDC with cancellation; four-leaved cover consists of five small sheets.

On May 17, envelope with commemorative stamp “The 275th birth anniversary of M.F. Kazakov (1738-1812), architect” is issued

Kazakov Matvey Fyodorovich (1738-1812) is a Russian architect, representative of classicism style, he also worked in pseudo-Gothic style. 

Since 1768 he has participated in the Expedition of the Kremlin building, in the creation of the Great Kremlin Palace (1768-1773). By order of the empress Kazakov has changed Bazhenov at the construction of the Usadba in Tsaritsyno (1786) where he has erected a new building of the Palace that remained unfinished. In Moscow Kazakov elaborated several types of town houses and public buildings which organized large town spaces: University at Mokhovaya (1786-1793), Golitsynskaya hospital (1775-1782), House-Usadba of Demidov (1779-1791), Petrovsky Palace (1775-1782). In 1776-1788 he built a building of Senate in Moscow Kremlin organically included it into the ancient ensemble. In 1786 Kazakov reconstructed the Lobnoye Mesto (Place of the Skulls) on the Red Square.

The envelope with commemorative stamp depicts the portrait of M.F. Kazakov, an architect’s image – view of the being built Petrovsky Palace (1778).

On May 18, souvenir sheet with one stamp “The 500th anniversary of the Alexandrovskaya Sloboda” is issued

The Alexandrovskaya Sloboda is the oldest residence of Moscow monarchs. By the order of the Grand Prince of Moscow Vasily III the best Russian and Italian artists have built a magnificent palace in Alexandrovskaya Sloboda. Since December 11, 1513 Sloboda became the residence of the Monarch, his family and court. The Embassies from many European countries were received and the most important political and trade agreements were concluded in the chambers of the Alexandrov Kremlin.

Tsar Ivan the Terrible made the Alexandrovskaya Sloboda the actual capital of the country, from where he completed consolidation of the country. There the oprichnina was established and from where the campaign against free Novgorod started. By the will of Tsar Sloboda became the largest cultural center of the Russian State. The best architects, icon painters, musicians lived and worked there.

The souvenir sheet depicts the ensemble of the Alexandrovsky Kremlin of the XVI century.

The illustrate cover is prepared for the issue; there is souvenir sheet and FDC with cancellation inside of it.

On May 24, souvenir sheet with one stamp “The 1150th anniversary of the mission Saints equal to the Apostles Cyril and Methodius to the Slavic countries” is issued

Saints equal to the Apostles Cyril and Methodius are the first Apostles of the Slavs, apostles of the Christianity, the creators of the Slavic written language, the authors of the first translations of the Holy Scripture into Slavic language.

In 859 Cyril began his work on the development of the Slavic alphabet and the translation of Greek service books. In 862 the Great Moravian Duke Rostislav applied to Byzantian Emperor Mikhail III with a request to send missionaries who could be able to preach Christianity in the Slavic language.  The brothers Cyril and Methodius have been put at the head of the mission who finished the translations of New Testament, Apostle, Books of Psalms and other service books together with flocks (pupils). The language of translation of Cyril and Methodius reflecting the dialect of Thessalonica Slavs and which came down to us in the lists of X-XI centuries became the first literary language of all the Slavs. It is customary to call this language as Old Slavic or Old Church Slavonic.     

The souvenir sheet depicts Saints equal to the Apostles Cyril and Methodius with a roll of alphabet and Glagolitsa surrounded by the religious people.
