On January 21, postage stamp “The 100th birth anniversary of G.N. Flerov (1913-1990), nuclear physicist”

Georgy Nikolayevich Fleorov after studying at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute started to work there under the direction of I.V. Kurchatov. In 1940, together with K. A. Petrzhak, discovered the spontaneous fission of heavy nuclei. The work was awarded  the State Prize of the USSR (1946). In 1955 - 1959 years, Flerov investigated the interactions of complex nuclei and the synthesis of new elements. The physicist founded The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in 1957 and was its director until his death

The postage stamp depicts the portrait of G.N. Flyorov and the element 114 of the Mendeleev's  periodic table, named Flerovium
