The Crimean Operation of 1944 was an offensive operation of Soviet troops aimed at liberation of the Crimean Peninsula from Nazi Germany during the Great Patriotic War. It was carried out from April 8 to May 12 of 1944 by the 4th Ukrainian Front and the Separate Seaside Army in cooperation with the Black Sea Fleet and the Azov Flotilla. The results of the operation were a complete defeat of the 17th Army of the Wehrmacht and a complete liberation of the Crimean Peninsula. A large enemy bridgehead threatening the Soviet forces operating in Ukraine was eliminated and the main base of the Black Sea Fleet, Sevastopol, was liberated.

In honor of the liberation of Sevastopol, a 24 artillery volleys salute with 324 guns was given in Moscow on May 10. As a result of the Crimean operation, 160 formations and units received the honorable names derived from the names of the cities of Yevpatoria, Kerch, Perekop, Sevastopol, Sivash, Simferopol, Feodosia and Yalta.

The commemorative postage stamp provides an image of the emblem of the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945; the main illustration shows a unit of marines returning to liberated Sevastopol, as well as a map of military operations.
