Emissions of state valuable postal matter in May

On May 2, a postcard with a commemorative stamp dedicated to the 150th Birth Anniversary of Gombojab Tsybikov, a traveler, ethnographer and orientalist, will go into postal circulation in the Geographical Projects of Russia series

Gombojab Tsybikov (1873–1930) was a Russian traveler, ethnographer, orientalist specialized in Buddhist studies, a statesman, translator, and a professor. He became famous as the first known photographer of Lhasa and Central Tibet and the author of the travelogue to Tibet (1899-1902).

In 1899-1902, Tsybikov traveled to Tibet with a group of pilgrims, with carefully hidden research equipment. He spent most of his time in Lhasa, the capital of the country, and the surrounding monasteries, where he took a number of unique photographs (about 200 in total) and was granted an audience with the 13th Dalai Lama. Tsybikov was making his photographic work and diary keeping in secret, under the threat of being disclosed. After his journey was over, he devoted himself to teaching and to the project of translating the Lamrim fundamental work by Tibetan scholar Je Tsongkhapa. In 1906-1917, he headed the Mongolian literature department at the St. Petersburg University.

The commemorative stamp provides symbolic images of geographical projects; the main illustration features a portrait of Gombojab Tsybikov with his photograph of the Potala Palace in Lhasa in the background, as well as the RGS logo.

On May 2, a postcard with a commemorative stamp dedicated to the 100th Birth Anniversary of Leonid Gaidai, a film director, a screenwriter, a People's Artist of the USSR, will go into postal circulation

Leonid Gaidai (1923-1993) was a film director, a screenwriter, an actor, a People's Artist of the USSR (1989). He was a participant in the Great Patriotic War. Gaidai was one of the most popular Soviet film directors. Most of his films became cult-favorite hits and were disseminated into quotations. Gaidai's films became the most beloved films over all the release time; among them there were Operation Y and Shurik’s Other Adventures, The Caucasian Captive or Shurik’s New Adventures, The Diamonds Arm, 12 Chairs, Ivan Vasilievich Changes Profession, Can't be! and others.

The commemorative stamp provides a portrait of Leonid Gaidai against the backdrop of a cine film; the main illustration features a production still of comedy Ivan Vasilievich Changes Profession.

On May 3, a postage stamp dedicated to Caucasian Mineral Waters will go into postal circulation in the Resorts in the North Caucasus series

The North Caucasus is a cultural and historical region of Russia located on the northern slope of the Greater Caucasus Range and the Pre-Caucasian region. The region consists of several resort towns and tourism and recreation complexes.

Caucasian Mineral Waters is a group of resorts of federal significance in the Stavropol Territory, a specially protected ecological resort region of the Russian Federation. It is notable for picturesque natural landscapes, mountain healthful climate, and is famous for its enterprises of the sanatorium-and-spa complex in Russia. Their main specialization profile is the provision of medical and health-improving services and treatment with world famous waters and mineral muds.

The postage stamp provides emblems of four spas against the background of a picturesque landscape and a mineral spring.

On May 13, a postal block dedicated to the 150th Birth Anniversary of painter Stanislav Zhukovsky will go into postal circulation within the joint issue of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus

Stanislav Zhukovsky (1873-1944) was an outstanding artist, a painter, a lyrical landscape painter, and an Itinerant. By the beginning of the 20th century, he became one of the most famous impressionist landscape painters in Russia. He traveled a lot through Central Russia, looking into ancient "nests of gentlefolk".

He is the author of lyrical landscapes: Forest. Ferns. Sunset (1895), Neman (1895), The Sunset. The Upper Volga (1897), Spring Water (1898), Clear Autumn. Indian summer (1899), The Autumn in the Manor (1906), Under the Spring Sun (The Lodge Gate to Ostrovki) (1915), etc. Oftentimes, he created paintings with interiors of gentry estates.

The postage stamp provides painting The Abandoned Terrace (1911) by Stanislav Zhukovsky; the margins of the block feature a portrait of the artist set against the studio with his paintings.

On May 15, a postage stamp dedicated to the 300th Anniversary of foundation of Perm will go into postal circulation

Perm is the administrative center and a modern city on the borderline between the European and Asian parts of Russia; it is located in front of the Ural Mountains, on the banks of the Kama River. The history of its foundation is related to the beginning of construction of a Yagoshikha copper smelting works by V.N. Tatishchev in 1723. In 1781, by a Decree of Empress Catherine II, the settlement in this area received the status of provincial and the modern name.

Today Perm is a multi-industry, scientific and cultural center. The leading sectors of the city's economy are mechanical engineering, oil and gas processing, electrical power engineering, chemistry and petrochemistry, food manufacturing, woodworking, and printing production. It bears the honorary title of City of Labor Valor.

The postage stamp shows the building of the Perm Museum of Local Lore and the Legend of the Perm Bear sculpture against a background of the panorama of the city of Perm.

On May 15, an overprinted postal block dedicated to the Perm Territory and the 300th Anniversary of foundation of Perm will go into postal circulation in the Coats of Arms of Constituent Entities and Cities of the Russian Federation series

The State Emblem of the Perm Territory images a silver bear walking to the right on a scarlet (red) shield bearing a Gospel in a golden casing with an eight-pointed cross on its back. The Gospel is topped by a silver widened cross incurved at the tips. The shield is surmounted by a princely crown.

The postage stamp provides an image of the coats of arms of the city of Perm; it is surcharged with the new face value of 100 rubles and overprinted with inscription “300 Years”; the margins of the postal block feature the State Emblem of the Perm Territory and a map of the Russian Federation.

The Nevsky International Ecological Congress has been held since 2008 in St. Petersburg; it serves as a discussion platform for representatives of public authorities, the business community, educational and research institutions, and public organizations engaged in improving the environmental performance of the economies of the CIS countries.

The 10th Nevsky International Ecological Congress will take place on May 25-26, 2023, in St. Petersburg. The theme of the Congress this year is Ecology: a Right. Not a Privilege.

On May 25, four postage stamps dedicated to wood carving will go into postal circulation in the Decorative and Applied Arts of Russia series

Wood carving is one of the types of decorative and applied arts, an ancient folk craft. Abramtsevo-Kudrino wood carving originated in the Abramtsevo estate near Moscow, in the village of Kudrino; its creator is considered to be Vasily Vornoskov. The most complex type of wood carving is sculptural. Its separate subtype is Bogorodskoe carving. Its center is the village of Bogorodskoe in the Sergiev Posad District of the Moscow Region. Wood carving in the Tatyanka style was created by Shamil Sasykov in 1990 and patented as his own unique invention. The chief place of origin of the Pomor dove, or the Arkhangelsk Bird of Happiness, is considered the Arkhangelsk Province.

The postage stamps feature articles made with different wood carving techniques: Bogorodskoe carving, Abramtsevo-Kudrino carving, Northern carving and Tatyanka carving.

On May 25, a postage stamp dedicated to the 300th Anniversary of foundation of Ekaterinburg will go into postal circulation

Ekaterinburg is the administrative center of the Sverdlovsk Region, the fourth most populous city in Russia. It was founded as a fortress plant on the Iset River in 1723. The place for the city was chosen by an associate of Peter I, V.N. Tatishchev. The city was named Ekaterinburg in honor of Empress Catherine I.

Today, Ekaterinburg is a large industrial, scientific and cultural center of the Ural Region and Russia. The city has more than 30 museums, above 600 historical and cultural monuments.

The postage stamp provides an image of the monument to the founders of Ekaterinburg Vasily Tatishchev and Georg Wilhelm de Gennin and a panorama of the modern part of the city.

On May 30, a postal block dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the Republic of Buryatia will go into postal circulation

The Republic of Buryatia is the constituent entity of the Russian Federation, a republic in its composition. It is part of the Far Eastern Federal District. Buryatia is a leading area of livestock breeding with cattle and sheep breeding being predominant. Besides, the Republic has well developed industry: mining, food industry, mechanical engineering, production of building materials, timber sawing, mechanical woodworking, and production of cardboards, cellulose pulp, paper, wood fiberboards and particleboards.

The postal block features the coat of arms, natural and architectural landmarks of the Republic of Buryatia in the national ornament design.
